Brooks Edmund Hardie, age 21 of Bremen, GA, passed away on Saturday, December 16, 2023,on Lake Guntersville in Scottsboro, AL, doing what he loved. A two-day search by local authorities, search and rescue teams, a community of bow fishermen, and several passionate local anglers concluded during the early morning hours of December 18, 2023. It was a humbling experience to have so many people come to support our family and participate in the search. The love and kindness of everyone involved will never be forgotten.Brooks was an avid waterfowler, loyal friend, brother, and son. He was born in Carrollton, GA on June 9, 2002, the son of Julie McNair Hardie and Gary Hardie and the best brother to Cal andCopeland. Brooks was a graduate of Bremen High School Class of 2021. He was an exceptional athlete where he lettered for four years in football and baseball – voted Most Athletic by his peers his Senior year. Brooks graduated in 2023 from Snead State Community College where he played baseball for the Parsons who were the ACCC Conference Champions and JUCO World Series Qualifiers in 2022. He had moved back to Bremen in May to work for Letel Metrics as a land surveyor and begin classes at Kennesaw State University to further his degree.
Brooks had a huge heart and if you were in his circle, he would protect you at all costs. He loved his family and friends, and was loyal to a fault. He was a protector and had a servant’s heart. He was selfless, especially when it came to hunting; he wanted others to love duck hunting like he did by making sure they had the best hunting experience every time. He was so passionate about waterfowl hunting; many of his friends will say they only started hunting because Brooks took them their first time. He loved the camaraderie that came with being in the duck blind. As Cal stated, “Brooks was on the come up. He had a job, had some money, had a boat, and he and his friends could pool money together for a cheap hotel room and food for a hunting trip.” That made Brooks a happy man.
On the day of Brooks’ funeral, a friend and fellow waterfowler said it was a “Bluebird morning.” He explained it as a calm that transcends any talk or chatter from your buddies. The birds are chirping and when the ducks fly overhead you can hear the wind in their wings…. it whistles. The plumage shines with all the beautiful colors God created them with. Looking down on the water, the reflection just reassures you that you are in a moment of peace created by the man upstairs.
Not only was Brooks passionate about hunting, but he was also strong in his faith. He was active in church, studied scripture, and took vigorous notes on Sundays. He wasn’t afraid to share the word with others. He would often share his faith through Instagram and texts with his family and friends of scripture to uplift them. We can only imagine Brooks is in heaven seeing the most amazing sunrises with a cold north wind at his back, landing big groups of birds in his spread.
Brooks was athletic, strong, and in the best shape of his life. We never once thought this could happen. Duck hunters rarely wear a life vest while hunting, and we feel if Brooks would have had a life jacket on, it could have saved his life. We want to make it our life mission to honor Brooks’ memory by using the gracious donations to educate hunters on the importance of water safety and wearing a life jacket. We also want to provide college scholarships for his legacy to live on through others with Brooks’ passion.
